Different Types Of Childcare

Finding the right type of childcare can be overwhelming with lots of different options. Whatever option you choose, make sure it is right for you and your children.

  1. Childminder and Childminder Agencies – Ofsted registered carers who look after children in their own homes. Childminder agencies can help parents find a childminder and provide additional services such as holiday cover.

  2. Day nurseries – these can be run by private individuals, businesses, community groups, organisations or employers. Typically they will offer part-time or full-time care between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Ofsted registered.

  3. Private nursery schools – privately owned nurseries offering sessional and full day care between business hours. Ofsted registered. Some may adopt specific educational approaches such as Forest School or Montessouri.

  4. Public nursery / Pre-school – run by your local authority and usually situated next to or nearby their respective primary school. Typically offer part-time or full-time care during school hours, although some also provide breakfast clubs and after school care too.

  5. Nanny – carers who look after children in their own home. A good option if you work unusual hours. Ofsted registration is not compulsory but Nannies can voluntarily register.

  6. Family – if you’re fortunate to have and willing and able family members nearby to help with the childcare this is a viable option, and too obvious a one to leave off of this list!
